SKIES, SUNSETS, and ATMOSPHERE

Ive wanted to start a thread just about sky features, be it sunsets, skies at noon, atmospheric features around the planet, cloud formations or whatever. Anything that requires you to look up is fair game.
.....
Ill start off with a shot of a fall sunset in the SMokey Mountains taken from Mt Mitchell.
The Appalachians are a soft edged mountain range, not craggy, just a friendly old timer .

@farmerman,
Lenticular clouds are unique form that come from moist stable air getting loft and then descending with some residual moisture that, once it gets to a local dew point , forms these clouds. They are often seen in downwin areas of cities with tall buildings. Atlanta get em a lot. Not sure about NY or Chicago

@farmerman,
I always enjoy the different shades of blue like in glaciers. The first photo is very artistic.

if these local billboards are to be believed there will be no more skies, sunsets or atmosphere left

@djjd62,
Thats another wackadoo belief (about "CHEMTRAILS")

These folks always entertain. Im amazed they can scatch up enough money for their huge bumber stickers (Most of them are unable to cobble together a compelling argument so they have a ready supply of internet "posters" from which to take the place of their own thoughts)

That's clearly not taking on a cell phone camera or a long exposure shot. I suspect a tripod also in use.... Can you provide the details on why it's so crisp and clean a night photo? #jealous #notaskingforafriend

Colima volcano, in Mexico. I have a terra cotta Colima Dog in my kitchen, up on a high shelf.

I'm off to read more about Colima.

@tsarstepan,
taken with a reasonably good digital SLR on a tripod, i just used the cameras night photo program, exposure was about 35 or 40 seconds

the skies where this was taken are crystal clear and being in the middle of the bush in an already sparsely populated area means no light pollution to speak of
