Hey, I get irked with "PC" too. I wrote a letter to my local paper about some new initiative (at the time) to replace all references to "disabled" with "differently abled." Pshaw.

At the same time, I think way too much actual thoughtfulness/ attempts at nuanced thought get tarred with the PC brush.

Edgar, poor sentence structure, but it appears to be politically correct.

Well then, you've got the tough part of your novel already done, that key first sentence. The rest should be over in no time.

But sozobe and you point to the problem with this phrase. It can serve as a useful descriptor of sillyness, but its modern use commonly includes such broad brush strokes that it seems now to most often function as a 'thought terminating cliche'.

The term was coined (I think I've got this right) by Dinesh D'Sousa about fifteen years ago to describe certain movements in university faculties, notably English, History, and Women's Studies. There was no question some silly stuff was going on (sozobe's example is a good one regarding uses of language) but D'Sousa's book is probably more appropriately thought of as a CV to the neocon club. And they are the crowd who wield the thing like a 360% shotgun (well, 359% to avoid self-infliction). Somehow, it never gets used by folks who note that certain statements about the present administration are sort of verbotten.

I used to define politically incorrect language as any usage that might offend the most sensitive member of any group. I now think you have to add to that any criticism of right wing sacred cows with patriotism at the top of the list.

Personally, I think all topics should be allowed, but I have a preference for decorous and rational language.

In the dark, nobody can tell Tweedledum and Tweedledee apart - or even that easily in the light, really...
