I love spring & today is a gorgeous 32C here in Melbourne, Oz. Very Happy BUT ..... it's hay fever season, too! Shocked And this year, because of lots of winter rain, grass growth has been quite rampant. As a result of all the grass seeds being blown about the place, hay fever sufferers are being driven crazy! The worst HF in years, they declare! It isn't TOO bad for me, but a fair bit of sneezing, honking, wooziness & eye watering is happening.

So ..... a question to fellow hay fever sufferers:

What are your tried & true treatments? (preferably not chemical)

Thanks in advance,
Olga

Some people say acupuncture is of benefit.

Me fella has had some naturopathic treatment, which appears to have allowed him to cope with my cats! (I can't cope with his...) I can ask him what the smeg it was, if you like?

I seem to get a litle benefit from homeopathic sprays - which I assume is plcebo effect.

But, actually, I really like Telfast!

I've been dropping a Telfast every morning for the last three weeks. My three allergy plants are in full swing - wistaria, jasmine and the pestitential, goddamned privet!!! My battle with allergic rhinitis (you ONLY have hayfever, some's of us suffer dreadfully dont'cha'know) is long and character-building.

Cold works. You can try one of those ice-mask things. You can also fight crime without your real identity being known.....

I should investigate this Telfast stuff. Never heard of it before. Does it make you woozy?

I heard that acupuncture is good, too, Deb, but can't afford such luxuries right now.

Hey, I like the ice mask! I'm gonna get one of those! Laughing

Stilly, I had a cat with rhinitis once. It was nearly the death of him, poor thing. I ended up having to take him to Werribee, where the Melbourne Uni specialists are, & they .......... No, I'd better not say more. It was NOT nice! I hope they don't have to do the same to you! Shocked

Telfast doesn't make me drowsy - it is not supposed to do so.

There are a number of similar drugs on the market now - ask your pharmacist.

Bless you!

My mother-in-law gets terrible allergies, and Claritin is the only thing that works for her. They make it in a non-drowsy formula and regular: http://www.claritin.com/index.aspx?blnFlash=true

Telfast is a non-sedating AH, as is Clarityne - as far as I know Telfast is a cheaper deal. I have bought it for $20 for 30 tablets (all day relief).

A lot of the others are sedating. Skip them. And don't do what I used to do before Telfast. I'd be dropping Polaramine and Sudafed in equal amounts - a trifle... cranky.... after the 4th day.

When you're sneezing from pollen, dust and mold can increase the sneezing. Check out:

msolga--

Comfort for the sniffles:

You and I have descended to this flawed planet from a more exalted sphere. Of course we're allergic--we're an alien species.

I am a life long allergic person. Had lots of shots years ago, which helped a bit. But still.... years of allergic rhinitis. One sunny day it sort of went away, about the time we remodelled our house, thus less mold, less mites on whatever dust...

Around the same time I stopped with the claritin and allegra (no use, either of them, re dosage, and expensive). I resorted to Benedryl, cutting tablets in half and weaned myself gradually. Hardly took anything for a few years.
And then one day, I started to itch.... instead of sneeze.

Be grateful for the sneezing.

Benedryl, 3.99 for 400 at Costco, works best for that too, after various visits to experts. I only take a half a pill at a time, so I don't get sleepy, although one gets used to it, and less sleepy. So, at some point, the itching also went away, for almost two years.

It's back again, and I bought some more benedryl.

Thing is, I remember there is a component to allergy involving some threshold of allergen, where you can tolerate x exposure, and once over that, kazowie. Naturally, after all this time, I forget all the details.

I don't sneeze...I just can't breathe. Allergies combined with athsma is a bad combo. I have had luck with some over the counters, although Benedryl is a bit strong, half a pill or no. One word of advise on OTC meds....do not take the 24 hour relief. I tried it thinking yeah, one pill all day and it dried my face (the inside of course) out so bad I actually got nose bleeds. I sympathsize with Osso...I have had allergic reactions that causes itching (hives... Rolling Eyes ) and it is no fun.
