Vegemite is 80 years old this year.
Most Aussies grow up with it. Some discard the habit. Some eat it all their lives. Some newcomers acquire the habit. It's said to be an acquired taste.
Is this what makes Australians different??? Is this where our sense of humour comes from? Is this what makes us such enthusiastic sport-people, for such a small population?
"It puts a rose in every cheek"
i was force fed vegemite on my sojourn to Brisbane last spring, what the hell is that stuff? and why do you eat it?
It's some form of yeast extract! Unfortunately, it is now owned by the evil Kraft Corporation.
We start it on it as babies. We like the taste. We crave the saltiness. Perhaps sbecause it gets so hot here, we need that extra salt!
I reckon it's what makes Aussies different!

What is it?
Pure magic! As margo says, it's an "acquired taste". You just didn't stick with it long enough to develop a habit!
AND it's full of vitamin B! This explains why Aussies are so clever & so very attractive! We grew up eating the stuff! It's a wonder food!
margo
Beats a spoonful of yeast powder any day!
<shudder, shudder ...>
Yay, msolga - what she said, times 2.
We're witty, intelligent, resourceful...and all due to magic Vegemite!!!
you forgot 'modest'....no?
well, i would certainly not argue your wonderful attributes but, i have to think it is in spite of not because of VEGEMITE
I eat vegemite somewhere between once a week and never. I LOVE vegemite!
Yay, littlek!
This explains your beautifulness & superior intelligence!
(pssst ... How did you acquire the habit?)
Mikey
Why be modest when it's so obvious to all?
Oh why thank you!
I had tasted it vegemite or marmite as a kid and then later as a young adult I happened onto vegemite again. After going to Oz 2 years ago I've kept a little jar at home. Sometimes they go fast, sometimes they go more slowly. I don't think I had to acquire the taste, I just like salty hits of flavor now and then.

And it never goes off! (as you've discovered). Just lasts forever & keeps doing good.
i just read up on it. i'm gonna try some if i can find it over here. i love salty but have to be careful with it.
what do you do with it? eat it plain?
Mikey
Generally on buttered toast. (But don't over-do it at first! A thin layer.) Also a surprisingly good "stock" base for soups, etc. Adds a little depth to the concoction.
That's it, going to make a toasty-treat right now...........
Just enough left for 2-slice coverage
i only have one comment Good Taste Is Timeless!!!
I prefer promite - must be why I am plain, humourless and stupid.....
