I don't know about a Gatsby analogy, but a recent post in the Financial Times has likened Trump to a dog, who is always searching for a new light post, with which he can mark his "territory" with urine. In other words, Trump is always looking for a new "pot" in which he can stir up more trouble ( according to the author of the FT post).
