A GI is a soldier, military person.

GI = "Government Issue" and comes (I think) from American soldiers in WW2 who had "GI" stamped on their clothes and kit (so it could be identified as belonging to the government and they couldn't sell it). It's a general term for American soldiers, not quite slang, but definately colloquial.

In Britain, a similar term is "Squaddies", meaning infantry soldiers usually of the rank of Private.
