People with chronic conditions such as asthma and diabetes are being urged to get their flu vaccination to avoid falling seriously ill this winter.
The Department of Health launched its annual campaign to encourage those most at risk from flu - people over 65, those with chronic illness and people having cancer treatment - to claim their free jab.
The campaign is backed by football star Paul Scholes, who suffers from asthma.
This year health officials are particularly targeting people with chronic conditions like asthma and diabetes, as well as those over 65.
Chief Medical Officer Sir Liam Donaldson pointed out the seriousness of flu and the importance of getting vaccinated.
"The flu is not a severe cold - it can be a serious illness, and 3,000-4,000 deaths are linked to flu every year.
"If you suffer from a chronic illness like asthma or diabetes, or are 65 years or older, you are particularly at risk from flu.
"This means that if you do catch flu, it is more likely to lead on to a more serious illness.
"The flu jab is the most effective protection from the flu. That's why our message for this year's campaign is 'If you knew about flu, you'd get the jab'."
Sir Liam urged anyone who qualified for the free jab to contact their GP.
