never been court ordered to pay. Have always paid. child will be 21 soon. I plan on stopping payments. Can ex file for support after child is 21.

Perhaps. Depends on a lot of things.
How is it that you never protected yourself by going thru legal channels? Do you have PROOF that you made payment all these years?

why would I want the courts that involved in my life and finances? we made an agreement and I kept up my end.nowhere in my divorce agreement does it mention child support. I have proof of payments dating back 14 yrs
We have long time poster here with a similar name, though it changed later.
These aren't the same people.
