A revolver is a handgun that has a revolving cylinder which holds the bullets.

A pistol is another word for a handgun (as opposed to a rifle).

A gun is a more general term and could be a handgun or a rifle.

They seem to be using 'pistol' as synonymous with with semiautomatic handgun nowdays. I reject the usage, but it has become fairly common.

nope...a machine gun is belt fed. this is a common misconception.

there are 3 kinds of automatic weapons. machineguns, assault rifles (automatic rifles), and SMG's.

SMG stands for sub machine gun, but refers to an automatic weapon that fires handgun ammunition.

Here's a classic short barreled revolver:

Here's a modern semi-automatic handgun. The clip inserts into the base of the grip.

Arnold just outlawed these in California because, apparently, they are preferred by terrorists (.50 BMG):

Actually bigdice, most muzzle loaders are .50 caliber...so there's precident involved. A Glock in 10mm is close to a .50 also.

Bit of a diference between a muzzle loader, a Glock 29 and a belt fed BMG isn't there?

it is really hilarious to see you able2knowers discussing firearms!

.50 caliber machine guns and rifles would be a very POOR choice for any common criminal activities, because they are LESS deadly than conventional rifles within approximately 1200 feet, weigh many orders of magnitude heavier, are extremely large and unweildy, and usually cost $3000-10,000 compared to $200 for an AK47 or something

ALSO, .50 caliber handguns are quite common. due to the non-frangible velocities of handguns, handgun ammunition is almost always much larger caliber than that of rifle ammunition. I could go into a 10 page discussion of terminal and exterior ballistics but i dont think you want that...

EDIT - fyi, no .50 caliber rifle has ever been used in a crime

lol, not really. the 10mm is much closer to the .40 S&W (although still smaller), and in handgun rounds every 0.1 is a huge difference in terms of velocity, penetration, recoil, muchrooming, recoil, and magazine capacity.

stuh, thanks for the input, I just was pointing out that poly's are trying to demonize weapons based on caliber, not the firepower behind it all.
