On average how many hours a week do/did you work?
Is overtime an option or is it expected?
For me I put in about 50 to 60 hours a week, I deliver and install high end appliances and the day is over when the truck is empty, so overtime is expected.
as a cadd operator for an engineering firm, i am rarely asked to work more than 40 hrs/week.
I work 40 to 48 hours a week in construction and play in a band on Friday and Saturday nights. The 40 hour work week is history for me.
I am down to 32 hrs a week at age 62. I worked 40 --- 70 before. I refuse to accept that I might be lazy.
Truth is, I am. I don't want to do any of it. I have layers of things I want to do on my own.
Retire? Um? All of you who have worked in good times for corporations can do that. No chance for me, m'lady.
Most weeks are 40 hours, Some more, few less.
Re: Does a 40 hour work week still exist?

Get that slacker a bigger truck !!!
Thanks for the support! I figure I could do at least 5 or 6 more hours a day but the customers just don't want their kitchens installed at 10 o'clock at night. What's wrong with these people?
I'd gladly work more than 40, but they don't want to pay me the overtime.
You're lucky, a lot of people, roughly 30 percent of employees, work overtime without the compensation.
New Overtime Rules Take Effect Monday (Aug. 19, 2004)
On an anverage, I do abt 60-70 hrs per week.
And no, I don't get any overtime
That is one of the benefits of my job, I get paid time and a half after eight hours so the overtime is worth it. At least until you see what Uncle Sam takes.
Gautam- thats rough, but if it's any consolation I feel better.
I work 45-50 hours a week.
I am a temp on an hourly rate and anything above 38 hours a week is overtime
Well, I turn UP for 40 hours.
Honestly I love how they pay me to stay on-line with you guys! It's very... 21st Century.

Same for me! I never ever give the b@st@rds a minute more than the 40 hrs they pay me for. I estimate about 35 hours of my 40 is productive work.
i'm in the agriculture buisness (greenhouses)
tons of work
50 - 70 hours at peak times
seven days a week most of the year
agriculture = no overtime
In answer to the original question:
No, it doesn't seem so. Many of tose in work seem to be working incredibly long hours (up to 60-70) with no overtime. Others, zilch hours & looking for work. Then there are the "casual" workers, who work a bit, then starve a bit. And, in Oz anyway, you need only work an hour per week to be classified as "employed".
My work is cyclical so doing busy times, I do work overtime – late hours and weekends so about 60 hours a week then. During slower times usually 40-45 hours a week – Although I may take a longer lunch so maybe a do average 40 hours a week then since I do not get paid overtime, I do not actually know the true hours a week I work.
We have flexible hours - so I work more hours when it is necessary and less when there is not so much to do. Works out pretty well for me. I usually have a plus of around 30 hours so I could also take a full day off without using a vacation day.
