Yes, it really is. Tonight is the first night of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. The new year will be 5765.

Here's a little info: http://www.holidays.net/highholydays/ and http://www.jewfaq.org/holiday2.htm
Here's a traditional food: http://www.jewishla.org/assets/images/ApplesHoneySml.jpg The cup is filled with honey, not wine. Wine's nice, too, though. :wink: Anyway, the apples and honey are because you should have a sweet year.
The shofar (ram's horn), it's blown to summon in the new year: http://www.jewfaq.org/graphics/shofar.gif

So, got any plans for the big night? RP and I are gonna watch them drop the big Matzoh ball in Times Square, my brother and his family are off to Synagogue. We'll call them tonight.

Quote:
L'shana Tova tikateiv v'tihateim

MAY YOU BE INSCRIBED AND SEALED
FOR A GOOD AND SWEET YEAR
OF HAPPINESS AND GROWTH!

With love to all!

I don't expect that shofars are hard to come by, but learning to play them is a challenge. Because I am Jewish myself, I am resisting the urge for jokes...I'm with family tomorrow for lunch. We have some great Fuji apples, and some organic honey.

L'Chaim!

I'm not Jewish but I love the apple and honey idea so perhaps I will celebrate with this tradition.

I was raised in the South so we always have to have black eyed peas on New Years Day. I don't know the signifigance of the dish, though.

Apples and honey for everyone! Oy!

RP, you just gave me an idea for dinnah. Can ya stand matzoh ball soup w/wontons on the side ('cause I was making wontons tonight anyway). :-D

Hmm shofars, shofars: http://www.jewisheart.com/index.asp?mode=ItemDetail&id=799&cid=260

Oy vey, engraved ones are expensive! Probably better to stick with the nonengraved type: http://www.jewisheart.com/index.asp?mode=ItemDetail&id=607&cid=249 Ah yes, much better, about 1/10 the price of the engraved type.

Tekiah! Teruah! Shivarim! See: http://www.shemayisrael.com/abtorah/mishnayos2000/sep12a.htm - these refer to the types of, uh, for lack of a better word, "blows".

When I look at Jes and Region's picture, I don't see one thing but a person. All of us have rituals, do we not?

Happy New Year, to all my Jewish friends. The saddest thing in the world that comes to mind is my first cousin who was in love with a Jewish man, and died unmarried because of the lack of understanding among my kin.

No apologies, however; it was the tenor of the times and the folkways and mores of the day.

Beauty and love have no boundaries................................................

With love from Letty.

Cav, in the music business there are NO boundaries. The only qualification lies in the fact that you play a mean horn/piano/drums/ whatever. (that can be really mean in an of itself)

To Jerome and Leroy Katz; To Gloria who was the best teacher my son ever had; To George Gershwin; to Joel, who married a woman who was Greek Orthodox. (good grief)

And to husker; onyxnelle who are Christians along with SoccerGeorge, and to Letty, who isn't quite certain what she is.

To Frank who doesn't know what he is; and to all those whom we meet and never question.

and to Charley, Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne who don't know and don't care. And for the Scottish in all of us:

Should old acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind;
Should old acquaintance be forgot in days of auld Lang Syne.
For auld Lang Syne, my friends;
For auld Lang Syne.
We'll take a cup of kindness yet,
For auld Lang Syne.

Shut up, Letty and go to bed.

We had a lovely soup (it wasn't really chicken soup, there was tofu but I added schmalz) with matzoh balls with a delightful apples and honey appetizer.
