whats the difference between claimant and plaintiff?

They're about the same and are often used interchangeably, but a plaintiff is someone who is bringing a case to court whereas a claimant is someone either bringing a case to court or bringing a matter to his or her or the other side's insurance company. Often, civil court cases involve insurance, so a plaintiff is often also a claimant.
