I think that was my problem with Eyes Wide Shut.
I didn't read EWS as a lampoon -- the story it's based on certainly isn't I was more receptive to it after reading many of the good reviews and enjoyed it for what it was on a subsequent viewing but feel as an art film it tried to bridge the gap between being commerically viable and artistically unique. Obviously, the theme must have had a powerful effect -- Tom and Nicole broke off the marriage not long after making the film.
