the use of for

Compare the two sentences constructions of using for:

That altimeter is used for measuring heights above sea levels.

That altimeter is used to measure heights above the sea levels

( the rule says that we have to use the first sentence , because this a thing purpose and the thing is the subject).

Look at the following two sentences below:

We use the altimeter to measure heights above sea levels.

We use the altimeter for measuring heights above sea levels.

( the rule says that we should use sentence one, because although the use of for is to give the purpose of a thing ( altimeter), but we use to instead of for because the subject of the clause is people not things.

( PLZ:correct me grammar mistakes and my writing method,Thanks)

I think sea level should be singular - there is only one sea level worldwide (apart from inland seas).

Vivien is right, I would also suggest that 'height' need not be plural. Other than that, I can't see anything wrong.

But , if we consider the rule,it is more favourable to say:

We use the altimeter to measure, than we use the altimeter for measuring

also,

The altimeter is used for measuring, than the altimeter is used to mesure.

But all the sentences are right.Right?!

This is exciting,I'm becoming a genius.Somebody stops me please!! Cool

That altimeter is used for measuring heights above sea levels.

Viv is correct, make both terms singular.

(Best)

The altimeter is used to measure the height above sea level.

(More complicated)

The altimeter is used for measuring the height above sea level.

but how about these???:

((Getting rid of used to)).

The altimeter measures elevation above sea level.

And because elevation means height above sea level....

The altimeter measures elevation.

Now I'm down to only four words and I have to stop.

In this case, you'll want to use the imperative of to stop (somebody stop me) and not the third-person form.

Other than that, good show everyone!
