Avatar Association Syndrome

I find that whenever I read a post, I connect what is written with the person's avatar. Often I will even read their post in a funny voice that varies based on the image represented.

Depending on the pictures, I will react differently at an emotional level. I find this is most present when the image is a face. But the type of face -- male or female, old or young, smiling or frowning, enraged or at peace -- will make a difference in how I read the post.

Does this happen to anyone else?

I think it's commonplace and has been a topic of discussion before. Avatars also make you feel good or apprehensive depending on whether you enjoy reading this persons posts.

I find margo's avatar very disconcerting.

A talking cat?

I just can't shake the feeling that's she's a human being.

It's no coincidence that as I was talking about certain avatars causing apprehension Gus pops his head in.

I haven't given this much thought, but you are raising an interesting issue. Perhaps a person's avatar does act as a subliminal influence in the way we respond to that person's posts.

Whenever I read any of Gus's posts, the image of his avatar picture is stuck in my mind. I can truly envision that scruffy-looking old duffer escaping from the looney bin, wandering around, wearing his dirty overalls, threatening people with his pitch fork, cozying up to his goats, and eating stray cats.

I can't imagine Gus ever writing a serious post. ROFL His avatar makes me laugh; his writing makes me laugh. He is a gifted writer. But, I have no idea who he is under the persona that he portrays on A2K.

Who is Gus in real life?

And be careful Margo . . . Gus has his eye and his appetite focused on your avatar cat.

Debra, I really shouldn't divulge this to an enthusiast but you're about to become a seasoned member. Gus, Slappy and Farmerman are all one person. Yes, I know this is shocking news but we try to not let on that we know. So please, just act natural around these three...err...this guy. We wouldn't want to set them...him off.

Yes. (And I still connect your posts with McTag, since he used your avatar quite a long time. )

That happens to me with dlowan's avatar. I can almost see the little rabbit throwing out one-liners like a fluffy, smart-ass, stand-up comedian. It just looks so sarcastic.

The question of Gus is a complete mystery to me. An intriguing character. But just who is he? What makes him tick? And what dark secret does he have buried in that old woodshed behind the shanty?

Gus hasn't always had the particular recent avatar. He was inscrutable even before, or tried to be.

Many of us when we first arrive at a2k pick an avatar from the avatar pile, whatever it is called, and I was the rosso fiorentino angel for a good bit of time, until I figured out how to fry my dog onto the screen. We get used to each other with the particular avatars and then along comes a new person ... just this week there are several with avatars others have held, as it were, for a long time, giving place to new before they might be ready.

To avoid disjuncture of this sort one can post one's own photo if one is smart enough, errrrrmmmmm.

Interesting topic. I chose mine simply because I'm a chef, and hate the fast food industry, but I'm sure it causes some feelings in say, the Politics threads. Laughing I'm so used to it now, I don't think it will change.

Avatars; whenever someone uses an avatar that someone else has used for some time, it can be confusing for a second or two; like when Roberta and JL Nobody and someone else were all using the cat in the same post.

I naturally regard the post above everything; but I think that the pictures people's animals sometimes say a lot about the posters' personalities themselves.

Hmm, I wonder what my avatar says about me... No don't tell me, I'm not sure I want to know.

When I first arrived I changed my avatar about every day, then I got bored with doing that and just stayed with the one I have. It may yet change again (if I ever find a picture I really want to use).
