How to go up and talk to a guy?

So there's a good looking guy at this gas station I get my gas and a drink. Don't know how to talk to him and just talk to him as friends and maybe find out if he's gay or bi. Or maybe even curious. What should I do? I get really shy and awkward around really good looking guys.
