Punctuation for complex sentence.

They had long ago traveled past the farthest edge of the great Ming Empire and were now deep in Choros Oirat Mongol territory 30 days hard ride from the furthest western Chinese outposts.

Is there any punctuation needed after territory? What is the rule in this case?

not sure what the rule is, but i would definitely put a comma after territory...

I think the rule, Reg, is, to use it wherever it seems to improve the sentence

I'd agree with Region, here.
"30 days hard ride from the furthest western Chinese outposts." is an explanatory clause.
