@JPB,
I always thought JTT was male. As for Hawk, he started a lot of threads that generated discussion. Of course he generally started with something provocative and would generally take an extreme position, but people starting interesting threads is what makes the board work. I'll also say that Hawk generally didn't go into the gutter until someone else went there first.

@JPB,
Yes!

If I remember, I often agreed with JTT (him) about events but got well sick of all the venom going along with what were ok points to start with, too oft repeated for me. I disagreed at least partly about prescriptive language being a major problem (I remember myself being in-between on all that.) The ignore button made sense for me to use. Peace in my time..

@engineer,
You know an entirely different Hawkeye than I know. I don't know how reasonable his racist, misogynist, pro child sex, pro child porn OPs sounded to anyone else but to me they were not "reasonable" and his treatment of anyone that dared to disagree with him was truly shameful and over the top. Also I've never read anyone who could only see issues from only his own warped sense of right and wrong. This is the guy who once said that his own children being molested by one of his neighbors was a good thing. That's insane.

@bobsal u1553115,
I didn't see that re his own children as he spent a lot of my time on ignore so I don't know. I know the rape thread occluded women who had been raped, for the most part, from almost the start.

I would converse with him if I had him off ignore for a while via his talking with Boomer, or on a food thread. Soon back to ignore.

Believe he said that if you want, Jo. Given the source, I don't believe it for one second.

The only way to sustain that prescriptive/descriptive language BS is to embrace cognitive dissonance. If someone says that one mustn't use double negatives (as an example) and you criticize that as prescriptive, you're being prescriptive yourself, because you are inferentially saying that they can't say that. As far as i'm concerned, that's just more of that Noam Chomsky BS of trying to politicize language use. There's nothing wrong with being prescriptive if it serves the needs of the students. If saying things like "I ain't got nothing" is going to create a bed impression, being told as much is doing you a favor.

I take it you didn't catch his performance in RG's thread about the proposed changes to the site. Your boy Hawkeye was long on hysteria, and short on evidence.

Then produce it, rather than just falsely characterize it, eh? Show the post.

@layman,
I don't think I will. There is no way to search it out easily and I'm not reading the the tons of garbage Hawkeye has chosen to post just to continue any discussion with you. When he's asked about it many times he's never ever denied it, and like I said - I wasn't the only one who read it. You not seeing it or knowing about it don't mean ****.

Good for you. When Hawkeye gets back you can ask him. He won't deny it. He sticks by even his most dismal poop.

Generally, I find being suspendered more comfortable than belted for a man of my girth.

When it comes to purchasing suspenders, I dislike clip ons; button ons are preferred. The only problem is finding trousers having requisite strategically placed buttons.

So, why has this thread totaled 11 pages?

if you've got the stomach for it, look at some of his interactions with female or gay posters

I've got decent tolerance levels (ask my tattoo guy) but I finally had to put him on ignore. If I'd thought it would have made a difference, I'd probably have reported him about once a day just before I hit <ignore>.

@ehBeth,
I won't deny that if someone hit at Hawkeye, he went downhill fast, and there is no excuse for the slur that got him banned. Not saying he was a pleasant guy, but honestly there have been many flame throwing wars over the years.

@engineer,
He slung first at a number of people, primarily women and people who either self íd'd as gay or who he suspected were gay. Some people slung back - you could see others put him on ignore. He was in more and more of a silo by the end.

We had a racist poster, a woman, with hate threads. Pamela Rose? Not certain of the name, because I never followed anything she posted in. I assume she is history?

Hawkeye definitely didn't see the world from the same place I do, but he strongly believed that he should be able to state and debate his position no matter how out there it was and A2K was a place to do that. I also think that while Hawkeye is outside the mainstream on many of his positions, he is not all that far outside the mainstream. There are plenty of racists, misogynists, etc out there but most of them hide. Hawkeye was willing, even eager to come here and debate his position, often taking a pretty big load of personal grief for it. Can't imagine someone who really admires Trump? Talk to Hawkeye. How can men really believe that rape statistics are misleading? Talk to Hawkeye. He was a window into a world that most of us have trouble believing exists, but polls show us that it does and it's not insignificant. I disagreed with Hawkeye forcefully across numerous topics, but I never crossed from the topic to the person and he respected that. I will say that I'm a white guy and his rep with women and homosexuals has been called into question. I'll also say that there were plenty of people completely willing to go off on Hawkeye with limited or no provocation. I can't tell you which came first. I suspect I'll find he was both the victim and the villain. If I have the spare time I might go back and read some threads all the way through just to understand them better.
