Context:
‘I hope no fatal tragedy has overtook the lad!’ said his grandfather.
‘Oh no,’ replied tranter Dewy placidly. ‘Wonder where he’s put that there fiddle of his. Why, that fiddle cost thirty shillings and good words besides. Somewhere in the damp, without doubt; that instrument will be unglued and spoilt in ten minutes -- ten! ay, two!’
What does the phrase ‘good words’ mean in this context? Am I right to assume that the tranter Dewy paid thirty shillings for the fiddle itself, and paid additional costs, say, costs for fiddle-strings, rosin, etc.?
@dunelmnae,
Quote:fiddle cost thirty shillings and good words besides.
besides = as well as
It cost me thirty shillings, and not only that, I also had to persuade / cajole the owner into selling it so cheaply.
@McTag,
Thank you so much, McTag. You've cleared up my question!
