For the past few months I've been having severe pain down the center of my shin and both knees. It's a crippling pain that only happens in short bursts where I cannot stand on that leg when it happens. It is completely random when it happens. Whether I'm playing a sport or just resting and sitting still, the pain is always completely random. Nothing provokes the pain. I've visited the doctors office prior to now and they insists it was just shin splints. I've done everything they've advised me to do after insisting back it wasn't shin splints considering I know what they are and I don't get a pain when I take steps. Like I said before, it's completely random. It has been a few months and I'm getting worried whether it could be something with my nerves especially since it is happening and getting worse in both knees. What should I do and what could it be?
@Diisasterologyy,
If it were me, I'd see another doctor, perhaps a sports orthopedist. I still think you have shin splints.
Also, in the meanwhile while you find a different doc, I'd back off on the running or walking miles, run on flat surfaces and do exercises to strengthen the shin muscle fascia. As a guess, I'll bet that you increased your mileage pretty suddenly or drastically, right
Here's an informative link that may help:

I'd change my running shoes..and/or orthotics insert. I did so myself (switched over to ASICS running shoes) and benefited amazingly.
I wish you good luck and may your pain end soon.
@Diisasterologyy,
Shin splints usually only causes pain with motion. If you're feeling the pain at rest and at random, explain that to your general practitioner and proceed from there. There are all sorts of things that could be causing it. Blood tests would reveal an infection. If you've had blood tests, a neurology consult would be next.
@Diisasterologyy,
I noticed that your original post also spoke of knee problems. Is this your shins or your knees where the problems arise?
@Ragman,
Ragman has no medical experience. Obviously.
@Tuna,
Nor did I ever claim that I did. What I do have is 20 years of running experience. If that is a problem for you, then feel free to set me on ignore and move on. Such childish responses aren't helping the OP nor are they ingratiating you to the forum.
What is your medical expertise?
@Ragman,
I'm an ICU nurse with an interest in philosophy. My experience extends to neuro-ICU.
I stopped expecting to be treated humanely on my first day on this ******* forum.
What I want is for people like you to stop posting things like "Isn't this pretentious?" on topics that probe the depths of what it means to be a human for those who faces death and degradation, as I do every working day of my life.
Who the **** to you think you are, anyway?
I'm not an avid sports player. I do about an hour of physical activity a day and wear comfortable shoes.
To make it clear, the first time this problem arose, I know for a fact I did have shin splints, but on top of shin splints, I knew something else was going on. Now that my physical activity is reduced because my main sport has ended, the pain (not shin splints) is still current.
I know for FACT this is not shin splints. I've had shin splints numerous times and I'm aware how to properly treat them.
The pain originally started only in my right shin almost right on top of the bone, I do not believe it is a fracture of some sort, but I could quite possibly be wrong. The pain has seemed to spread into my right knee, and now (AFTER MY SPORT HAS ENDED) my left knee has contracted the same problem. The pain mostly happens in my right knee and right shin. To once again clarify, the pain in my shin is down the middle of the FRONT of my leg almost along where the bone falls. It is a sharp, shooting pain, that only lasts a few seconds, like pulses, but happens more frequently than I'm comfortable with.
If I had to guess how many times per day I get this pain on either my knees or leg, I would guess probably around 10 to 12 times per day. This has been frequent for months.

Have you tried stretching exercises?
@Diisasterologyy,
Sorry for your distress. I know how frustrating that can be.
An icing regimen, anti-inflammatory meds such as Ibuprofen, as well as specific stretching exercises has/have been known to help people with similar symptoms.
My suggestion which I made earlier still stands: see another doctor. Perhaps seeing a sports orthopedic specialist while get to the root of the problem.
I wish you well.
@Tuna,
I have tried a few exercises, mostly the same ones from when I had shin splints. I asked a nurse I know that is a friend of mine and she told me to ice my legs and knees. I have been doing both of these things and nothing seems to help. I was just wondering if anyone could possibly know what this is or if it's serious. I can't find another thread about this anywhere. I was told it could be something with my nerves or just a knee cap is turned to the side and causing pain. Would this be something that needs surgery on, or would excersises be the miracle to fix the pain I have? Like I said before I can't even stand on the leg when I have the pain. It's completely crippling.
By the way, thank you for your feedback so far!
@Ragman,
Thank you for your feedback. I will schedule an appointment with a NEW doctor real soon! Thank you again!
@Diisasterologyy,
Your specific questions would be better directed to a licensed medical professional. On the forum we are not permitted to give medical advice.
@Tuna,
Once again I offered no medical advice. What I offered was my experience as a runner.
@Diisasterologyy,
You're very welcome. It's very important that your medical professional gives you the respect you rightly deserve. Mostly likely you know your own body best.
Lastly, as many people have some similar complaints, it is possible that you might have runner's knee, Chrondromalacia. Maybe it is additional issue? only a medical doc should give you a definitive answer.
If you Google it, you might learn if this is at all related to your issues.
@Ragman,
I offered my advice based on my knowledge of worst case scenario. As Ragman advised: find a good doctor.

Oh young dude, enough already.
