I don't know the etymology of the appellation "holy roller" (and can't be arsed to look it up right now), but to me it suggests someone who is gambling. They want the jackpot: escape from certain death and instead, an eternity of bliss. They're metaphorically rolling the dice with regards to having chosen the right holy god, the right version of faith in it. Of course, fellow gamblers enable them through the currency of public validation, in exchange for equivalent validation in return. Enablers enabling enablers in exchange for reciprocal enabling. Facts be damned, it's off to the casino.
