Looks like the Carolina coast gets the first hit of the season. Is it me or do we seem to be getting this weather earlier each year?

Hey, David, Welcome to A2K. Frankly, I'm a bit surprised that we've had so little in the way of tropical waves and such; however the season isn't over until November. Let's just hope that we're spared a Cat 5. Any activity where you are?

i think the season is on-time. august through october... i just moved back to the eastern corridor and it feels like home to concern myself with hurricanes.

i was living in the midwest where tornados are the hurricane equivilent-- now they scared me. interestngly, midwesterners were comfortable with tornado threats, but the thought of a hurrcane terrifed them.

welcome, david.

Thank you for the welcome Letty.

I'm in Maryland, close to the Eastern shore. It's been generally rainy today, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for those who still haven't gotten their lives back together after Isabel tore through here last year. Some are still fighting with the insurance compainies. Damn shame, you fork out all that money in premiums and they drag their feet compansating you. Evil or Very Mad

Well, David and Gala, I remember the fear that I felt when we had a forced evacuation during Floyd. My word, the only damage we got here was a misplaced plant or two. The worst damage was a tropical storm. (forgot the name of that sucker).

I have always feared a storm surge. I remember one night, I dreamed about a tsunami, and it was so real that I could feel the water on my back.

Tornadoes? Good grief. One may not predict them as easily as that old counter clockwise force. The Homestead hurricane put the fear of God in the insurance companies, and they retreated like the cowards that they are. Now we are at the mercy of those who want your money, and stall when the time comes to pay.

Some time back, a rogue wave hit Daytona Beach. No one has ever figured out what caused that thing. Rolling Eyes

I'll trade you hurricanes for tornados! We never know when & where the damn things will hit. At least with a hurricane, you usually have a day or two's notice. Plenty of time to get outta there.

eva, i agree...when i was in the midwest we had a few scares. a native told me the best thing to do was hold on to a toilet bowl-- with all the wires and attachments it's one of the better options for not getting sucked up into oblivion.

Hurricane season began June 1st. I was thinking that this is fairly late for the first named storm of the year...haven't researched that yet though.

It's officially 6/1 thru 11/30.

I looked into the first named storm of the last 10 years, and this isn't a record. Alberto was named on 8/4/2000.

This one shouldn't do much damage. As a North Carolinian for the past 18 years, it seems to be early to me too. Fran, Floyd, Andrew, Hugo... All the major ones seem to have occured later in the season. Maybe we are just remembering the "Big" ones and have ignored the tropical storms.

Here's a great beach cam link. Even when there isn't a storm brewing, I like having it up just for the sound of the ocean.

I've already heard that the east coast is in for it this year. We just had Isabel last year. I'm not hoping for a repeat this year. That's just scary.

But we still have to wait and see what's in store for us on the coast.

It doesn't really matter, you know, folks. Like Phoenix once said. Just keep a lot of cans of tuna fish handy. This may be the year that I'll ride it out at home. There's always a first in all of ours lives.
