caro (dear in italian)
dolcetto (sweatie in italian)

when i walked through the little red-light street on my way from supermarket to home, two of the prostitutes (sitting outside, it being a hot day), called out, "hey, liefie" -- so I guess "liefie" is one ...

In Dutch you also have "schatje", which is either a little cheesy or really, err, urban ...

what about "habibi" (Arabic), eh?

i just now only happened upon dag's thread ... read thru a coupla pages ... damn. i didnt know. i'll send her an e-mail or something. thats so sad. but - i gotta feel a great admiration (and some intimidation) by how she just takes it all by the horns and deals with it.

i mean, stuff like that - so bad, only happens two or three times in your life (you hope), and yet she grabs it, summarises stuff in a series of short posts, and deals with the situation - in a matter of weeks. and in a level-headed way, too, avoiding the nasty swamps of **** one can get entangled in, too. damn.

with me, how long have i occassionally let it slip out that i've become, what? - lost, scared and generally f***ed up, now? years? one step forward two steps back, two steps forward one step back.

better to just shuttup about it already ... sorry for the hijack.

my dutch synonims dictionary has for "schatje", also "liefje", altho it labels 'em both as "pejorative"
(thats a bit much - its colloquial perhaps, a bit prole-ish - but "pejorative"!?)

"schat" works too, in a soap kinda way - tho its "schattebout" that you would really only ever hear someone say in a soap series.

"lieverd" is a bit ... well, it refers to a guy, but only to a real softie, kinda err, ball-less guy ... its kindof condescending. "mijn lief" would be classic, gentle and rather Flemish-sounding.

hhmmm ... i dont think we have many idioms for sweetheart, definitely few as unambiguously sweet as "sweetheart"! odd ... where's Rick, perhaps I'm missing some? (where is Rick, period?)

By the way, nim(h), it takes just as long as it takes to get over a thing such as this. Dag is very good at working, it's what she does when under stress of any sort. She's still hurting and knows that she willbe for some time. You take the time you need to get through to the other side.

seriously - "schat" literally translates as "treasure" - so no, err, dubious connotations!

actually, there are people who use "poepie" as a term of endearment - "little poop".

I heard one in Germany that sounded like 'schnutzle', which is supposed to be some kind of pastry.

Ha! Hmmm. Actually, the word 'butt' does come up quite a bit in my terms of affection aimed at my dog.
