That's straightforward--societies is plural, so one would write "Societies have."

@Setanta,
I know but I've seen it written as phrase one

@Setanta,
Thanks for your rude reply!!! I wanted a grammatical expert opinion because as an native English speaker, both sentences appear correct to me.

You claim to be a native-speaker of English and yet say that both sentences appear to be correct? You came here for an answer and then want to argue about it? You're surprised that you got a reply that you characterize as rude?

Bye.

@Setanta,
and judging by this and your hıstorical posts, you just like to be confrontational for the sake of it!!!!

I don't like to see Setanta getting all those down votes and abuse in posts that he has suffered in this thread, because - he's right. Those who don't like what he writes should GET OVER IT.

No, Setanta only becomes confrontational when confronting jerkwads.

@Tes yeux noirs,
Shouldn't that be: Setanta becomes confrontational only when confronting jerkwads.

Or, better yet: Setanta becomes confrontational when confronting jerkwads.

The author of this thread became confrontational, and then sought to blame it on me. I gave him a correct answer, and he apparently decided he was justified in arguing about it.

Provide the source from where you have seen it written as phrase one? I'm guessing that you cannot because it is obviously incorrect.

Well, you did get an expert opinion. And it is not surprising that both sentences appear correct to you, since you refer to yourself as ". . . an native English speaker . . ."
