Disappearing OP

Thu 29 Oct, 2015 10:06 am
I don't know whether it's just my old age but when I'm responding to an OP and change my mind, exiting without saving, the OP disappears from every listing

I am wondering if anyone else has noted this peculiar fortuity

It's highly likely that you're replying to something that we found to be spam, and we pulled it (we're rather quick).

You don't need to tell newbies not to post links. The vast majority of those folks are here for one reason only, and that's to spam the site. You can report them by hitting the 'Report' button on their post.

Thanks Jef for responding but it has happened to me so many times I can't believe it was all spam. Select any OP, try it once or twice yourself

@dalehileman,
I have been moderating forums for over a decade. I know spam and spammers very well. It is usually the case that a newbie who drops a link with the very first post is spamming the site and has no reason to come here other than to try to glom onto our good search engine rankings. Period.

If this is happening to you then maybe it is also because of having a lot of tabs open and losing track, or refreshing a screen. I don't know. No one else has reported this and no, I don't experience it. But try avoiding new topics where the poster is brand-new and has dropped a link, unless you want to report them and have us take a look at them. They won't know you reported, and it helps us to find spam. Thank you.

And my husband knows my name isn't Jef.

@jespah,
Jes I did it once more, just to be sure

(1) Go to New Topics
(2) Open an OP (Replies: 0)
(3) Click on REPLY
(4) Type a sentence, then hit (carriage) return--Not(screen) Reply ('Cause you've changed your mind, decided you don't wanna respond)
(5) Hit left arrow twice to get back were you were
(6) Click on update (usually a 3/4 circle with arrowhead, up at the top of one's page)

Poof! it's gone

Sometimes it has apparently disappeared altogether but I find that sometimes we can now find it on page 2; but in any case software glitch, having mistakenly interpreted my attempt as a genuine Reply

@dalehileman,
I just did it...

...then exited A2K completely.

And here it is.

Okay thanks Frank but did what exactly

Quote:
And here it is

It won't work in a goin' thread such as this, hasta be solitary OP

Unnecessary step

Okay Frank but try it following my instructions exactly

Perhaps I'm assuming too much of my readers. The OP stands for "Original Posting," one that hasn't yet been answered

Incidentally sometimes the OP shows up in my own "My Posts," an obvious software glitch, even though zero responses

@dalehileman,
I suspect it is the way you have your A2K preferences set.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the Preferences link. Find the spot where it says Topics List Preferences. Answer yes if you want it to put unread topics at the top of the list above any that you've opened. Answer no if you don't want it to do this.

I suspect yours currently says Yes and the topics are being moved below the ones you have yet to open and read.

no

instead - follow Jespah's direction not to respond to new posts with links in them right away

I'm sure Jespah and her team will appreciate your support.

@ehBeth,
Sorry Beth if I wasn't clear. The two problems are entirely separate and yes, probly best not to respond to the OP/link at all. However the other problem, of disappearing OP's, is still kind of mysterious., looks like software glitch

@jespah,
So I've tried it a few more times. Last time at the top of page 1 in New Topics was an OP

http://able2know.org/topic/299951-1

.....something by Smithy about Colossus, which when I returned had jumped to page 3 . So why don't you now go to page 3 and see if it's there for you also; so if it is you will know there's most certainly a glitch, and it's in a2k software, not my pc

Try it yourself, Jes. Go to my procedure #....903 and follow it exactly as I indicate

@ehBeth,
Same here.

People do see posts differently, depending upon their settings.

Wait, are you assuming that everything stays the same after you refresh the screen? Because if you are, the thing of it is, A2K moves pretty quickly. As other topics are answered or updated, the view - which is chronological - is bound to change.

When you went to your Preferences and changed it from Yes to No, did you scroll further down the page and click the Update Preferences button? If not, then it did not save your change.

Try again and this time click the Update Preferences button and see if that makes a difference for you.

Beth you might have waited too long after my experiment (see Jes #....073)

I had assumed everyone was on the edge of anticipation instantly after its posting so immediately made the necessary observation

Aha! thanks But, I feel like such an idiot

You were right of course; yet I shouldn't be able to shift the topics around like that, so isn't it still a software glitch

Still thinking it over whilst taking a crap, I concede the phenom changes the entry's loc only in my PC and not yours. So it would take two of you guys working together, to determine whether or not I have done so for all the rest of ya

Anyone interested who can enlist a buddy

Well as you can see from a few posts immediately above, the shift might be in my software only, in which case you're doubtless right. However if my action (under "Yes") changes all your listings too, then it's an a2k glitch

Edited to remark, that's before your #....650 above; so apparently a2k is okay. Again thanking youall for resolving this issue!!!!
