Thumbs up-down revisited

Reply Tue 20 Oct, 2015 02:19 pm
Forgive me if I'd been answered previously but I'm an old guy. For the sake of abridgment when I hit thumbs-down, am I signaling a distaste for the posting

...and if so, how else to curtail "My Posts," etc

Thanks fellas

Forgive me again Tes. I hit the thumbs-down in order to remove it from the posting. That way, I don't have to turn the page so very often

@dalehileman,
I'm not a fella.

I consider thumbs down of threads to be cleaning house, and that rarely has any real distaste going into the thumbing. The few a2kers I have distaste for are on ignore, and I don't see threads started by them in the first place, and only see what they said in a post if someone quotes them.

On individual posts, I try not to post down for disagreement. A lot of people do use it as a disagreement tool. I do sometimes post down for what I think is an inappropriate post, try to do that sparely.

I probably thumb up too much, for appreciation of posts I like.

Of course, you can thumb down your own posts or threads to somehow "clean house".

He is talking about removing a topic from the list of topics that he has posted in, so he can scan over just the topics that he is interested in.

When you vote a topic down, it is sort of hidden.

Hidden posts/topics are still there. I don't think hiding them impacts how often you turn pages.

Me too of course

Yes but I wonder if everyone is so aware

Yes that would seem kinda silly

Yea, I should do that more frequently

Quote:

Of course I can but I don't see how it would accomplish anything

or threads
I presume you mean under My Topics. But of course the problem arises under My Posts. But thanks Osso for responding

But thanks again

But Ora doesn't it impact the number of threads listed on that first page

So if I thumbed 'em all down on page 1 than I'd have to flip to page 2

Or am I missing some vital point

@ossobuco,
I'll add that I'm a sort of principled house cleaner. I tend to wait until new posters gather some thumbs up before I cut them off; for example, the english as a second language folks - I don't want them to see a zero for their question, posting here at all is probably hard enough for some of them. Same for me with a lot of other newbies.

Osso what a kindly soul

However doesn't your response tend to confirm my feeling that some if not many take it the wrong way

@dalehileman,
Oralloy is right (mark the day I said that), the page still keeps a small bit of info on the thread you posted down, if it is an actual thread. Tiny letters where you can see it if you change your mind.

Or, if it is a matter of regular posting on threads, the corner will turn at x posts (20? I used to know this but forget) whether or not you wish to see it, whether or not you shut that post down.

@dalehileman,
I've started more threads than many people. My threads move with my interests.
You might be surprised to know I started a zillion threads on architecture and subsequent blah blah, now some years ago. I've started a fair amount of threads on photography, one in the last few days. Nada response, just people looking and leaving.

I don't take this personally, it has to do with who is interested in what, when.

Cats!!

My point, zeros can hurt, but internet suckers like many of us can learn to live with it. For new people beginning to search, they probably all get a bath of ugly on different sites.

Still Osso, doesn't it make more room for listings on the same page

Nah I was thinking mostly My Posts but thanks

Why don't you try it? If you thumb yourself or others down in MY POSTS, you can also thumb yourself or others back up. See for yourself, eh?

Me, in all my years after My Posts started here, 2008, I think, but may be wrong, I've only looked at it once, meh.

If I want to see what I said recently on anything, I look at my profile, which keeps my own posts in reverse order, last seen first, or use Search Forums window to find subject matter, easier for old stuff as I've posted a zillion times.

A2k is workable in various ways if you play around with it.

Oss forgive me but I'm not sure whom you were addressing

Sorry again Oss but try what

I would but the issue with me wasn't the individual posting but the My Posts listing. Tho again my apologies if you were addressing someone else

@dalehileman,
I was talking to you, dale. Who else posts this stuff?
If you want to clean up your MY POSTS, go there and thumb them down, one by one. Then you'll see small words where you can click them back up if you wish.

The page postings will remain the same number, I am almost positive. Not sure. Try it.

Also, DO NOT CALL ME OSS.

Sorry Osso but by "stuff" do you have reference to thumbs

Yea Osso, thanks, I know that, sorry if I wasn't clear. I was merely wondering if there isn't a better way that avoids offense to the sensitive soul

Forgive me Osso, I had forgotten how much it offends leaving off that "o". I have a note to that effect up on the wall in front of me via Post-It but at 84....
