Thumbing Down?

Reply Fri 15 Apr, 2016 07:44 am
I, occasionally, encounter, within threads, a sense of disapproval at 'thumbing down' stuff.
I thumb-down everything I have no interest in, not to piss people off, just because it vanishes forever from my index-page.
If this is perceived as other than - Just give me a 'hide' function - I'll apply that instead.
But, until such time - I will carry on.

@mark noble,
Well, I see that as a totally selfish tactic which may result in a post vanishing from view at worst, or a poster being constantly discouraged at best.
Imagine if everyone was as selfish as you. Virtually every thread would sink without trace.
Why do you have to make it vanish? Can your brain not cope otherwise?

Selfish.

I understand the OP frustration.
It's aggravating to hit 'New Posts' and see almost nothing but word games and other stuff that doesn't interest me. I often miss the few I am interested in among the clutter.

'Hide Thread' button is a good idea .

@Lordyaswas,
Erasing it from (my) view is why I do it.
I couldn't give a flying **** how it affects others.
I don't pop into this antiquated residential home to please others - I do it for me.
Not that I aim to displease anyone, ever - But I don't need (irrelative) agony-aunt, furniture-arrangement, crosswords and wordgames in my face, everytime I log-in either.
Shoul I bear this for your sake?
Nope - Fk your 'acceptable' brain-drain - I'm erasing it.

@mark noble,
Seeing as you seem to dislike this site so much, may I paraphrase a traditional two word British phrase and ask that you combine sex with travel?

@Lordyaswas,
Never heard that phrase - Lived in the UK all my life.
And I don't dislike the site - just prefer topics I can relate to.
You respond to anything because it is all you've got.
That's your sojourn, not mine.

Like the paraphrase of the Biblical "Go forth and multiply"?

Review the information in this thread on how to use the topic filters to remove entire subjects from your index without thumbing.

I have to agree with mark on this portion.

What interests me is different than what interests him, so we tidy up (thumb down) pages and posts to suit our own preferences.

Pretty funny! People disagreeing with the OP are thumbing his posts down which will soon hide them from others , a practice they label as selfish. :-)

When I thumb down one of Mark Noble's posts, it's for a reason to do with the specific post, e.g. it's a load of toss. This happens quite often.

@Tes yeux noirs,
So, Mark's posts are 'a load of toss'?
That's fine - Yours aren't - I find some of them quite interesting, informative and concise.
Just out of curiosity - Why do you respond to them?

I suppose I'm a forum whore. On re-reading my previous post, I see that I may have given the impression I think all or most of your posts are a "load of toss". That is not the case, but some of them are occasionally, I feel. I expect some of mine are too.

@Tes yeux noirs,
Tes, you're a decent person. And you will benefit many with your views.
In my opinion - You hold a ladder for folk to climb.
It's nice to see.

@Region Philbis,
Region - That avatar you?
Looks like me 'less greyer'.
I don't even know what 'thumbing-up/down' means.
It means 'irrelative stuff vanishes' (Thumbs down).

Why thumb-up?
No idea what that means.

Didn't know that, Thanks.
The thumbed down posts are sometimes the ones I find are most interesting. I often miss them when scanning through a thread.

I've even thumbed-down my own posts/threads because I think them a distraction.
And, I invite all of mankind (Ok, 25 ppl on a2k) to decimate my shite, accordingly.

I must have all this up and downthumbing wrong, as it seems that people are using the downthumb simply to clear their decks, rather than indicate that the downthumbed post was not nice.

I try to only use the downthumb to indicate my dislike of a certain post, for varying reasons.

Interesting.
