Please can someone tell me the relationship between Lady Mary Montagu, the friend of Alexander Pope and Basil Montagu, the friend of Coleridge and Wordsworth.
I've Googled and Googled and still can't find it.
Many thanks
What I know, that Lady Mary Wortley Montagu had with Alexander Pope only acquaintance.
John Montagu had among other children by the singer Martha Ray, also Basil Montagu.
Does that mean that Lady Mary was Basil's grandmother?
The poets were a bit of a red herring, sorry about that.
Thanks
Hmm, maybe Setanta will pop in here to give you some help.
Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, née Pierrepont (baptized May 26, 1689, London; died Aug. 21, 1762, London), daughter of the 5th Earl of Kingston and Lady Mary Fielding (a cousin of the novelist Henry Fielding),
eloped with Edward Wortley Montagu, a Whig member of Parliament.
Edward Montagu, 1st earl of Sandwich
(born July 27, 1625, Barnwell, Northamptonshire, Eng.
died May 28 [June 7, New Style], 1672, Southwold Bay, off Suffolk)
Basil Montagu (1770-1851), son of John Montagu, fourth earl Sandwich [the "inventor" of the sandwich] and mistress Martha Ray.
The Earl of Sandwich also holds the titles of Viscount Hinchingbrooke and Baron Mountagu of St Neots. All of the titles were created in 1660. The courtesy title of the Earl's eldest son and heir is Viscount Hinchingbrooke.
Earls of Sandwich (1660):
Edward Montagu, 1st Earl of Sandwich (1625-1672)
Edward Montagu, 2nd Earl of Sandwich (1644-1689)
Edward Montagu, 3rd Earl of Sandwich (1670-1729)
John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich (1718-1792)
John Montagu, 5th Earl of Sandwich (1744-1814)
very interesting. source?
I've got that Lady Mary Wortley Montagu lived from 1689 to 1762. So which Edward did she marry?
I hope I'm not confusing you ...... it's bad enough I've confused myself!
