Could I use each other?

-What method did they use to understand what __ utters?

In that case, the usage of 'each other' is different from eg Don and Susie really loved each other, because 'each other' above is followed by a verb (=utters).

The verb can come before or after "each other".

A and B love each other.
Since A and B are both deaf, how can they understand what each other utters?
(Alternative to above):
Since A and B are both deaf, how can each understand what the other utters?
