what is the origin of the phrase "missed the Boat" I was told that this was a racial degredation ?

I did a google search, and found multiple sites that say the phrase "miss the boat" is of nautical origin.
This
one's typical: "to miss the boat in the fig. sense of "be too late for" is from 1929, originally nautical slang."
