"Promise made, promise kept." Those were the words of John Kerry, Secretary of State a few minutes ago in Cuba.

"On a beautiful January day in 1961, three Marines walked out of the American Embassy building in Havana and lowered the US flag that had been flying proudly outside. They promised that one day they would return and raise the Flag again. Today was that day!

@Moment-in-Time,
Terrific news in so many ways.

Very pleased that the US is moving forward in some of its relationships.

@Moment-in-Time,
Cicerone Imposter, President Obama has kept one of his promises. Now, I'm looking forward earnestly to the closing of GTMO aka Guantanamo Bay.

Delighted to see you again, C.I. and hoping you're feeling much better. I've missed your passionate fiery rhetoric.

@Moment-in-Time,
From the European perspective this is long overdue. We can only hope that both countries will grow closer together.

Today, Fidel Castro complained that the U.S. Government owes Cuba reparations for the trade embargoes that were imposed after the U.S. discovered Soviet weapons in Cuba aimed at U.S. Cities.

Indeed, it was a historic breakthrough, but in the opinion of many, a smart decent move. As President Obama said, after 50 years of gridlock, its time to try something different. It's going to be tough slogging to confirm a US Ambassador to Cuba. Congressional members and presidential hopefuls lashed out at Obama for “vindicating a dictator." The president requires Congress to lift the embargo, but faces factions in both parties unhappy with renewed relations.

The 89-year-old Fidel Castro's words pale in comparison to the act of raising the American Flag on Cuban soil. But I see the old soldier
would like to remain relevant and is still voicing his discontent at the US.

You going to pay the cost of building an identical facility somewhere else?

@Moment-in-Time,
Loved the symetry of the Marines who lowered it way back, passed it to the new Marines who raised it. Smile

@HesDeltanCaptain,
The geology of Cuba has always fascinated me Its in a weird position at a tectonic "rise" along the Cayman Trench.
GTMO serves as a really sorry symbol that, whether we need to open a similar facility elsewhere or not, it should be closed and returned to Cuba. They actually retained sovereignty in the 1934 redo of the 1903 agreement but, its kinda skeevy having the facility there as we begin (or try to begin) a new phase in our relationship.
