1. Are they both correct and do they mean the same?
-How old was John?
-How many years old was John?

2. In response, such as in an exam paper, does the candidate get marks for writing
-Eighteen years old.
(Supposedly the inclusion of 'years old' would give you zero marks; but I am not sure)
