My teacher told me
-This is the first time for me to go to New York.
is wrong, but today I heard
-That was the first time for both of us to battle with our Pokemon!

What makes the first wrong but the second correct?

I don't think it's grammatically wrong, but it's certainly not idiomatic English.
It could be better expressed in a simpler form.
