Are OTC Headache Medicines Causing Rebound Headaches?

Doctors are looking at the effect of taking too much OTC headache medication. There seems to be a correlation of high doses of OTC headache remedies and rebound headaches, which can cause a chronic, vicious cycle:

What do you think? Personally, when I take to many aspirin, I develop a temporary case of tinnitus.

Phoenix:

The cause of you ear problems when taking aspirin is due to the salicylate. Common side effect. Idea

Many nasal drops tend to re-bound too.

New Haven- Oh, I certainly know about nose drops. Years ago, before I had my deviated septum corrected, I was a Vicks Sinex junkie. I would get these terrible colds, that would lock in, and I would use up a couple of bottles of Sinex for each cold. They would last for literally, weeks, because I kept futzing with my sinuses!

dlowan- Have you had an MRI of your neck? Headaches that radiate from the neck are usually caused by arthritic processes where you develop spurs on the vertebra.

It could also be as simple an explanation as a tension headache. When a person becomes tense, often the muscles in his neck tighten, and he develops a tension headache.

Phoenix, getting tinnitus means you have overdosed
my dear... really - if you are having that many
headaches, you must change jobs or spouses or
see a decent doctor to find out why.
*Afrin - the nasal spray is known to cause rebound
congestion - but I really can't see any correlation
between the two - because chemically they are so
completely different.
*But - you know that if aspirin were invented today,
they would make it a prescription only drug....that is
how dangerous it CAN be.
*As for the best medical minds and all that crap, they
can't figure out what is good for you and what isn't
and on top of THAT, they change their minds every
time you turn around. First it is - take estrogen
supplements, it will save you from decreasing bone
density etc etc etc,
*NOW suddenly they are not even finished with a study
they're doing, and they are prematurely saying that
estrogen replacement causes all these other kinds of
health problems. AND on top of that, it looked to me
like they did the study using only Prempro - when it
should have included ALL of the kinds of estrogen
replacement medications. Just because Prempro causes
some problems, IF it really does....does not mean that
ALL hormone replacements are automatically bad for
you.
*Like the big deal with eggs and cholesterol, they do
not know what they are talking about 99% of the time,
but talking and publishing a piece in a medical paper
is all so very good for your career if you are in the
medical field.
*Take Bush - for example lamely trying to put a good
public relations spin on something that is really very
dangerous and very bad for the American public. Here
he is saying how speeding up the new drug process by
the FDA, will make all kinds of medicines available to
John Q Public - and isn't that just great. MEANWHILE,
the reason we HAVE the FDA to force all the big drug
corporations to do all that testing is to prevent another
disaster like the one with thalidomide and deformed
babies. What Bush is REALLY DOING is loosening up
the reins for all the big drug companies -(I guess they
must have one heck of a great lobbying group in the
capital) - AND at the same time, trying to tell us dumb
Americans that he is doing US A FAVOR. When all he is
doing is saving the big drug companies BILLIONS!
I wonder if he gets a percentage of what they save,
I mean - the hundreds of tests, studies, and all that the
FDA requires (and for good reason - look at what
happened not too long ago with the Fen Fen fiasco)
those years of safety and efficacy testing required by
the FDA has been a sore spot with the drug lords for
AGES.... but they have always been made to toe that
line. Fulfill all the prerequisite testing to ensure that
unsafe drugs are not dumped out there on the market
only to find out 6 months or a year later on, that their
drug is actually destroying people's livers or kidneys
or something. Honestly - government and Bush
especially - are disgusting.

All my life I have suffered from terrible headaches. There are the stress headaches - feels like I have been hitting my head against a brick wall. Sometimes I take Ibuprofen for them. Then in my mid 40s I started with the Migraines totally different and had to get medicine from the doc to help me through those. Then I get these marathon headaches, sometimes I take a pain reliever sometimes not because they usually last two to three days and nothing helps - even after they are gone I have pain memory, really weird.

My mother took me to the doc many times as a child. I have been to the doc as an adult and they cannot find a reason. It is all stress related I believe. But I try to stay away from pills since they rarely help. The only one that helped was the migraine medicine.
