-Since he has to cite Very Happy the essay Very Happy , then is he allowed to include some Danish in his term paper?

1. Can the object of CITE be ESSAY?

2. Is the existence of THEN grammatical?

1. Yes. To cite is to refer to (a passage, book, or author) as evidence for or justification of an argument or statement, especially in a scholarly work.

2. Yes. 'Then' forms part of an 'if ... then' conditional sentence.

Thank you. But for 2, the sentence I gave does not have 'if'.... Would your answer be different?

'Then' can follow 'if' and 'since' (which is in your sentence).
