Canuck and I

With Canuck and Cassiar being in the thick of nesting season, my visits with Canuck aren't as plentiful as they have been. Don't get me wrong, I'm not sad. Frankly I don't have the right to be. In fact, our friendship is an oddity that just happened unexpectedly. To expect a Wild Crow to show up everyday to visit me, especially when he's starting a family is ridiculous. But when I open my door in the morning and see this, I know he hasn't forgotten about me

FEMALE VERMILLION CARDINAL

Photographer Melissa Groo writes: "The Vermilion Cardinal is found in Colombia and Venezuela. Here a female singing robustly and frequently from spots near the beach. Her crest is stunning!"

The bird named Canuck that I often post about has become a parent. I was surprised to learn he spends most of his foraging time catching spiders to feed his young. I had no idea crows even sought spiders.

Canuck meticulously removing spider webs from his beak, and in turn the spiders he would shortly after take back to the nest to feed the kids. You can see he has a lot of spiders in his throat. A lot of people did guess "washing spiders" but what I was looking for was a little more specific. In the photo you can see water travelling down the spider web from his beak. Kinda looks like he's drooling. When he was done getting a spider web off of his beak he would very gently drape it over the side of the yellow pail. I guess a spider web would be like finding a hair in your food. :-)

@jespah,
I have a mockingbird nesting in the front tree and a cardinal nest in the back. The mocking bird used to swoop our heads, but not since I got Rocky the BIGDAWG.
