-doubtless there are whole books in Pragmatics or psycholinguistics or something devoted to unpacking this point.

Does this IN mean in the field of? If yes, can we use IN?:

-John had to write an essay ___ philology.

"On" is more common here. In both cases.

Is your answer the same for this: (=ON/IN both correct, but ON more common)


-In our very last lecture, we would consider some key topics Very Happy in Very Happy Morphology/Sociolinguistics.

Since this appears to mean "in the field of", in this case I would opt for "in".
