-The show resembles nothing so much as an obscene and extremely well-funded high school assembly.

This 'nothing so much' is a bit different from what I know:
-Off she went without so much as a 'goodbye'.

What do the red words mean?

It means not only that the show resembles an obscene and extremely well-funded high school assembly, but that of all the things that it could resemble, an obscene and extremely well-funded high school assembly is the one it resembles most.

The insinuation is that it probably should have resembled something else.
