U.S. Expels Two from Iran's U.N. Mission

UNITED NATIONS - The United States has expelled two Iranian security guards employed by Tehran's U.N. offices after the mission was repeatedly warned against allowing its guards to videotape bridges, the Statue of Liberty and New York's subway, U.S. officials said Tuesday. "These individuals were moving around New York City and essentially taking photographs of a variety of New York landmarks and infrastructure and the rest," Stuart Holliday, the deputy U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, told reporters at U.N. headquarters.

From: http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/Northeast/06/29/un.iran/

The two were seen taking still photos and video of New York City subways, buses and tunnels, and were expelled last weekend for conduct inconsistent with their official duties, the State Department said.

But an Iranian official said: "Like anybody who visits New York, they visit tourist sites -- sightseeing and videotaping themselves, looking at the Metropolitan Museum [of Art], places like that."

On my last visit to NYC, I took over 350 pictuires of various things. Subway grates, subway cars, bridges, buildings, etc. I am no terrorist. I just wanted to be able to have pictures of my trip as I have no idea when I will ever be able to get back there again.

Subway grates and tunnels are certainly very popular for tourists. Only an alarmist would suspect that the Iranians were planning anything.

"We will map 29 sensitive sites in the United States, and give the information to . . . terrorist organizations," Iranian hardliner Hassan Abassi said in Tehran two weeks ago, according to The New York Sun.

"We know where America's Achilles' heel is," Hassan said.

Brandon, do you seriously think that these guys were taking pictures in an effort to grab intel? I mean, if these guys want pictures, layout, transportation plans, and major sites in New York, they can get those quite easily - off the internet.

Even easier would be to have someone who, I don't know, isn't acting as an active security guard for Iran take the pictures (which seem like ordinary tourist pictures to me) and mail them back.

No offense but this whole story sounds like a conspiracy theorist's wet dream....

The Bush administration needs to keep the American Public on edge. This is a simple way to do it.

Of course not. The idea that people in the Middle East are plotting terrorist attacks against us is a base canard. I am very certain that the 9/11 terrorists did no reconnaissance at all!!!

Worry not. America's cities are completely safe. The film allegedly captured from Al-Qaeda in 2002 of nerve gas being tested on a dog, is obviously a fake, manufactured by the Bush administration to perpetuate a false climate of fear. Only the gullible would believe that anyone is plotting to attack our cities.

With the atlantic ocean on one side, and New Jersey on the other, it is the most isolated city in the country, but it is still in the country, dys.

Yes, yes it is. No one else except for these fools would possibly believe that anyone is plotting terrorist attacks in America. These liars even had the nerve to claim that the FBI stopped a plot to bomb the millenium celebrations in Seattle.
