In the beginning, it all seemed like an uphill struggle, and I was literally living on alms!
Most of us, find it difficult to control our anger, and it becomes a spasmodic problem when it gets out of hand.

Sounds fine when spoken. Writing needs a little more formality. I recommend avoiding the overuse of certain conjunctions and (there I go) pronouns.
