Set, I'm so glad you are back on A2K. I've missed your intellect, wisdom, sense of humor, and lack of pretentiousness.

Wow, Setanta, thank you for that mini-history lesson. I really enjoyed reading that.

the irritation bush showed was a result of the discomfort at having his sense of entitlement challenged. rich folk never, ever can stand it when they are called on to account for their actions. they don't even understand that for 99.9% of the world, that is the way it is daily.

Hear Hear! Right on the money, Kuv.

This perhaps has opened the door to more serious interviews and less condescension.

I doubt it. I don't think it will have any effect at all on future interviews. Bush's people know that scripted answers with about as much depth as a pile of steaming **** are much more effective than letting that arrogant prick speak his mind.

He could have just bought a Corvette instead of lusting for the Presidency.

Did anyone notice the body language of the President during the interview? It appeared to me that nearly everytime he answered a question, his head moved from side to side as in indicating no. t just looked strange to hear an answer such as "absolutely" with the gesture of "no way".

Perhaps he was just thinking to himself "I can't believe she asked me that!".

I suspect we won't see any further ad lib interviews with unfamiliar reporters.

Well, irish reporters are pretty swift.
Or at least thoughtful. I have followed Nuala O'Faolain, not for her articles but through her books.

Ah, I dunno so much, where is our Kara, who might give us an irish newspaper survey?

ok so perhaps I am one of the few that watched this interview but really it was the expression on his face that said "wow, are you like allowed to ask me questions like this, I am really confused here"

What bothers me the most about this interview is how the media people in this country treats Bush with kid gloves. They have no spunk! Maybe they're afraid of what Bush is capable of; GWBush is an expert on "FEAR" mongering.

I read the transcript last night and was shocked at the Shrub's inability to answer any of her questions. It was as if he couldn't get beyond the old, trite scripted answers he always gives.

It wasn't until today that I watched the interview. There was never any indication that he understood any of the questions or had any interest in providing thoughtful, reasoned answers. It was actually painful--embarrassing to realize that this/he is what is considered the political leader of our country.

How far we've fallen...

Guys, let me refer you to Krugman's column today (on Moore's film) http://www.nytimes.com/2004/07/02/opinion/02KRUG.html

Krugman makes one claim there (but do read the column first) with which most of us would agree, that the regular media in the US has NOT been doing its job. Those of us who have been reading foreign press over the last two years and comparing know this to be so. The important question becomes 'why is that so'?

He also makes the claim that there is presently a 'crisis in American democracy'. Some of us share that notion, even if it sounds alarmist (alarms sometimes go off when there really is a fire).

These two claims are profoundly related.

The media is control by the Right - money wise, that is. If anyone questions Bush hard,

1st - the Bush gestapo won't let that reporter ask another question - Helen Thomas in point.

2nd - that media company will demote, fire that reporter.

3rd - Mudoch or Clearwater would buy them out.
