Here we go!
Now that Labor's out of the way, let's have another go!:

Last Update: Tuesday, October 12, 2004. 7:23pm (AEST) ABC online

US throws free trade deal launch into doubt

The US ambassador to Australia has cast doubt on whether the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) will take effect in January as planned.

Ambassador Tom Schieffer says the enabling legislation passed by the Australian Parliament and the US Congress has to be reviewed.

"We're waiting for the letters from the two governments to certify that both governments are in compliance," he said.

"We have ways to go."

He says the major sticking points are amendments that Labor introduced to prevent big pharmaceutical companies from keeping cheaper generic drugs off the market.

Ambassador Schieffer says the US is concerned about the move to penalise pharmaceutical companies for frivolous patent applications.

"Our concern in that regard is that if you can do that for pharmaceuticals then you could do that for software packages, or auto parts, or any number of any other things," he said.

"In that way set up an artificial trade barrier, which is what the free trade agreement is trying to get away from."

Trade Minister Mark Vaille says he hopes the deal can still take effect on January 1.

Hi Moondoggy

Yep, I'm a long time import to Canberra. People around the country vote for the biggest tool in their electorate, send them to us and then blame us for the decisions they make.

In the house of reps for ACT the ALP won on the primary vote - no-one knows the government like the people who work for it.

Still remember you from my first posts on Abuzz - something about cover versions of songs.

I always thought Canberra would be great if we could tow it to Byron....

I've just been sent a picture of some graffiti in Redfern - sorry no website so I can't show you it but it says:

"If you voted liberal I will hunt you down and kill you... I don't know where you live but I'm very good @ research"

I've not noticed this level of anger in previous elections, usually it's just depression.

You're a part of the politics industry, then, hingehead? (I sort of figured that ...) Would it be rude to ask for a very obscure job description?
