... and speaking of clutching at straws in stressful times:

New poll bucks trend with Labor win
October 9, 2004 - 3:55PM/the AGE

Pollster Gary Morgan has again put his reputation on the line, going against the trend in other polls by forecasting a close Labor win tonight.

..A Newspoll in today's Weekend Australian newspaper had the two parties equal 50-50 after preferences.

... Mr Morgan said Labor's most marginal seats looked solid for the party, apart from the Tasmanian seat of Bass.

Polling in 11 marginal ALP seats found support holding up by 61 per cent to 39 per cent.

But in 29 coalition marginals, the coalition was trailing with 49.5 per cent to 50.5 per cent.

"However, the Liberal-National Party marginals are not looking strong enough to ensure a Liberal-National Party majority," Mr Morgan said

Keep your eye on Eden/Monaro - it has always had it's rep in the ruling party. Coincidence or iron-clad rule? We'll know soon enough...

Right then! I'll keep that in mind as I watch Anthony goes through his lists!
Eden/Monaro. Gotcha! Very Happy

Ah - a small candle amid the gloom - me friend Steve looks like he has taken Hindmarsh from the Libs - and my own seat, Adelaide, looks like it has laso been wrested from the Libs.

(Remember, Americans, liberals here are the conservatives.)

Alexander bloody Downer seems comfortable in his seat, dammit. Nearly lost it to a singer from Redgum last time!

Howard triumphs in Australia
By CNN's Grant Holloway
Saturday, October 9, 2004 Posted: 7:33 AM EDT (1133 GMT)

SYDNEY, Australia (CNN) -- Australia will return Prime Minister John Howard for a fourth consecutive term of government, probably with an increased majority in the Parliament.

With two-thirds of the vote counted Howard's conservative coalition primary vote is up to nearly 47 per cent, nine points ahead of the opposition Labor party.

The Coalition looks set to win at least 80 seats in the 150 seat governing House of Representatives.

The victory is a sweeping endorsement for Howard's conservative coaliton government.

Thank you. You worked harder than I at this election. I hope Steve gets up; still close but maybe at home base you have more info. Adelaide and Hindmarsh look hopeful but I am still waiting. It's odd that in Kingston some of the poorest and most desperate will be represented by a Lib who will massage the interests of the privileged to the North and South. Martyn Evans seems to be a loser but seeing him on telly tonight I felt he looked so old and tired it might be a good thing.

The strong message from today's vote is Labor's core vote is not large enough to withstand the backlash of the faint hearted. In subsequent elections the fear factor has triumphed. Different issues but the same emotion. I think Labor made mistakes in this and the last federal campaign but the real problem it is not setting the political agenda between elections.

There are a lot of losers today, many of whom voted for the coalition. Now is the time to begin the education of these voters so next election complex issues can be the election issues. For example, Medicare Gold is a concept which will in time become a vote winner but announcing it 10 days before an election was catastrophic. In the end I think it proved a liability because of uncertainty. Carressing the Greens is a mistake. Two Rep seats and probably a Senate seat were sacrificed for the sake of preferences which would flow to Labor anyway. Most Greens are further from the Libs on Social Policy than Conservation Policy, such people do not prefer Conservatives.

Nope, Deb Sad

I could just cry. I can't believe it.

3 MORE BLOODY YEARS!

I saw Latham's speech, but we had to turn the bloody TV off before Howard's victory speech. Mad And they look like controlling the Senate, too! ... Industrial relations "reforms", the sale of Telstra & god knows what else. OK, it's clear, we're all going to have to keep these bastards in check. No more apathy!

But right now, I'm having a very large glass if white wine .... <sigh>

Now let's watch the Libs deliver all those reckless promises! No non-core promises allowed! And when interest rates (inevitably) rise, there is no way they're getting off the hook!
There are going to be some very, very angry people, very soon! And frankly, I can't help but think that it serves them right for being sucked in by Howard's nonsense.
