Would this use of a colon be correct?

Please allow me to introduce myself: My name is John Wilkes Booth.

I always feel like there is some grey area with colons. Is it just me?

@goingincircles,
This is a link to a free copy of Strunk & White's The Elements of Style (don't worry, it's legal).

Learn it, know it, love it.

No, a colon should be followed only by dependent clauses, such as lists. Put a full stop there instead.
