Yes, I had an idea today about a great science project. My student teacher was talking about his lesson plan which had to be about the historical origins of science and he had this idea to choose twenty scientists from ancient to modern times and assign one to each student to do a short report on. They would stand and read their reports in chronological order going from Thale or Thalen (or someone like that - I wasn't familiar with the name he mentioned first, as I'm sort of a nonscientific sort) all the way up through Watson and the discovery of DNA.

And then I said, you know, as a person who's fairly ignorant of science in terms of its historically major players and background (aside from someone like Darwin) - what'd be really interesting to me would be if you had each person actually stand in order and read from one end of the timeline to the other and then maybbe you, as the teacher could elaborate on what was going on culturally and relate the discoveries to religious or economic or historic events. And then you could also talk about how the discovery may have shaped the time - or how the time may have either encouraged or limited discovery.

Which is your favorite branch of science: earth science (geology) biology, or chemistry?

(Sounds like a good lesson plan, Aidan!)

I was best at chemistry at school because I loved the names.. and I had to give up biology at the age of 12 because I wanted to take Latin instead... but now enjoy/understand biology/medicine more.

Do you like reading popular science?

I like to read anything having to do with earth science...I find that (the history of the earth as told through land forms, rocks and fossils, etc.) fascinating. I also find human biology interesting- moreso than botany and zoology. I never really got into chemistry and I don't understand physics enough to enjoy reading it- but I love to look at the pictures! Laughing

If you could choose a different subject to major (concentrate or read) in other than what you did, which would you choose.

*the lesson plan was Matt's idea- I just told him which aspects I'd find interesting- but it wouldn't really have been practical. First of all, he was teaching science, and I was trying to get to the sociological and historical aspects of everything (which is more of where my interests would be).
Secondly, he'd have had to have six hours and a detailed knowledge of human history from ancient to modern times to pull it off, and he's only 22. But if you had the right teacher with the right background doing a unit on that - I do think it'd be pretty fascinating.

I studied French, and wasn't thrilled by the course. I would hope to have the stamina to study medicine, as being interesting and useful. But perhaps psychology, as it is now - in my young day it was all rats in mazes.

What did you major in, and why?

I majored in English because I love to read good writing. I took a few education courses, but found them simplistic and dull- so I ended up with a major in English and a minor in Human Behavior which at my school was a combination of psychology, sociology and anthropology - it was pretty fascinating.

I would have liked to do medicine- but I'm too squeamish- can't stomach the smell of blood and other assorted bodily fluids. If I had to do it over again, I think I'd major in archeology instead of English and just do my reading on the side.

What's era do you find most historically interesting?

Each era has its interest, and on the whole I'm more interested in history by topic, e g medicine - not at all interested in the kings/wars type of school history I learnt. Just seen a fascinating programme on prehistoric India, the Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro civilisation so am interested in that now.

Are you more interested in the past than the future?

Yes, definitely (in terms of history).

Isn't that interesting though that you're not interested in the kings/wars history of England (I presume that's what you were taught in your school) while I am fascinated with that but could really take or leave American history.

So overall, would you say you're the type of person who's more interested in learning about different cultures, or discovering or delving more deeply into your own?
