Cal-

I'm not saying you can do anything much about it.
But The Naked Lunch as defined by Bill Burroughs is knowing what's on the end of your fork.

The lovely lifestyle you live is dependent on things and you should know what they are. That's all.I agree it is humbling but none the worse for that.

I'm a country boy to the deepest depths. But I know we need cities too.Symbiosis.And we all NEED oil and we just have to trust our governments to get it for us because there is nothing else.

Isn't it obvious?

Nothing's ever obvious. I'm going to answer for Cal because I don't know where she is.

I would suggest simply being opened up to it.The sound sometimes starts a sort of rythmic moaning as if it is emanating from a jungle and when you know the words they sound really mysterious and almost alien. If I'm in the bath and music is playing elsewhere in the house there is a similar effect but not as good as in a crowded pub or an engineering factory.I actually once heard an engineering factory sing.Probably just luck.It sounded like Mahler's 5th from a mile away.Motorway traffic occasionally does it.That Fingal's Cave thing is based on music made by waves and if you listen closely to Lay Down Your Weary Tune you can hear wind moaning through the branches.

Ever heard that sort of thing?

Many times. Funny again, that you should mention wind because I hear what you're describing a lot of times in the wind - which is what there is a lot of here. I never knew how much I loved the wind until I moved here. Now I know...

Do you know we will get pilloried for this conversation - I'm just a little hippie girl at heart, but what's your excuse? Laughing

I don't need an excuse.

I don't think we will get pilloried.

What makes you think that?

Because, well...nevermind....who the hell cares? That's all I have to say.

Did you know I was such a rebel at heart?

You are supposed to ask a question aid.

e.g.Is it alright if I go and take Pearl to the toilet now?

Then one of us can say.

Yes.That's ok.

Is it alright etc?

Is that clear?

Oh, okay, sorry.

Did you know that Pearl did use the toilet - and now she's okay to be in for the night? How's that?

No, no dogs in or on my bed. Pearl prefers to sleep on the slate kitchen floor as opposed to in her own little bed or on rugs in the living room and dining room - I think because it's cool. Isn't that weird? Seems like it would be way too hard, but that's what she seems to like.

Is it still hot where you are?

It's absolutely freezing in australia - 8 degrees I believe has been the lowest in my city. Of course, in Canberra it snows...

How do you cheer yourself up when in a moody state?

I do something that I know is comforting to me: listen to music, play the piano, take a bath, get a hug/kiss from my kids, take a walk and surround myself with beauty, anything to remind myself that there are still wonderful things in the world waiting for me when I get in a decent mood again.

What are the things that you have learned are comforting to you?

sleep. I never realised its potential to rid bad or sad or negative feelings until a friend actually pointed it out to me - that sleep can make you feel better. At the moment, sleep is impossible as I am in the university computer room. But I hope that a good sleep tonight followed by some TV tommorrow may wipe some of my negative down side away.

How are you?

I'm great. I too find sleep very healing and therapeutic. It's a great escape, when you need to just shut everything down and retreat to someplace safe for a while.

What do you do in the University computer room?

At the moment, I'm alternating btwn a2k and getting ready for semester 2 of the academic year - printing out notes and downloading readings. I don't have access to the net apart from university, so I'm here alot of the time, both working and just surfing the net.

Do you have any particular favorite bands when you listen to music?

Laughing You don't want to get me started on that. I listen to a lot of stuff - all the time - so my favorites are always changing. One person I really like right now - his voice, his musicianship, his songwriting is Mark Knopfler - you may be familiar with him as the former frontman of Dire Straits. He has made several solo albums - I love his Sailing to Philadelphia. It's interesting because there are a lot of songs on it that have to do with American history - and I don't know if I'm making this up or not, but I think I read that he was studying or teaching history. I could be wrong on that - but anyway - check that album out. It's also very soothing and calming. I love the Prairie Wedding Song, Wanderlust, Silvertown, there really isn't a bad song on the whole thing.

How are you doing, by the way, aside from being busy with school stuff and cold?

Well I'm still trying to get out of break/holiday mode and mentally preparing myself for another backbreaking 6 month's of university (whopps, related back to school stuff!!). Otherwise, I'm worried about my grandmother's health - she seems to be really out of it these days, with her legs swollen and painful. The doctor said that germs had gotten into her legs and now she has to take antibiotics, on top of the million pills she already has to take. I would hate to be old.

What are you doing there in UK? I hope things btwn you and your husband/ex are good.

I'm sorry to hear about your grandmother. I know it's hard to watch someone you love age and see all the problems that are associated with that start piling up. I am watching that happen with my Dad - and it is painful to watch- I can't imagine my life without my father (or mother) in it - but I know it's inevitable...
I'm enjoying the summer. Traveling around, seeing the sights, doing a lot of stuff outside. I have a volunteer job I go to twice a week - and then there's taking care of the kids, house, lawn, garden, dog, cooking, etc- so I keep busy. My husband and I are pretty much status quo since we last spoke. We seem to be doing well with the situation as it is-we've had a long time to adjust to it.

*Make sure you check out my favorite song today.
