I agree that if an animal is tagged, then an effort should be made to find the owner.
I also think its funny that the people on here complaining are not from California.
If you dont live there, then why are you upset?
Arnold took office with a clear mandate, balance the budget.
Now,he is trying to do that and people from outside Ca are screaming bloody murder about it.

We would prefer that no state budget be balanced by means we consider to be cruel.
With California billions in the hole, i find the contention that saving 14 mil is crucial necessity to be more than just a bit of a stretcher. Ah-nold wasn't so concerned about the budget that he couldn't resist making a grand stand play for the cameras by eliminating the automobile purchase tax on day one.
That was a campaign promise of his.
14 million here and there add up quick.
So does several billion per annum in tax revenue . . .

The automobile purchase tax has not been eliminated.Sorry to burst your little bubble.
What was done is that the tax was rolled back to what it was before Davis TRIPLED it.
Are you saying you would gladly pay TRIPLE the cost to buy a car?
Man, triple the purchase price. That really would be some kind of tax.
CA's car registration tax is a socialist's dream come true. As true an asset tax as property taxes, based on the value of the vehicle, rather than the number of axels or weight. IMO people with BMW's and Mercedes should get the diamond lane all to themselves. Get that friggin Hyundai out of my way.

I've always had a dog. As a matter of fact, I spent ( minimally) more than $15,000 on my dog ( now deceased) over the span of his life. The dog, I now own ( a puppy ) will be covered by pet health insurance and will visit his vet at regular intervals. If he's sick and needs special care, I shall take him to a referral hospital for treatment. I've always been kind and good to all animals.
Really sorry you don't think I have a "loving heart".
Mysterman
Mysterman, I lived all my life in California until I moved to New Mexico late in 2002. My family and many friends still live there. Why shouldn't I and others who don't live in California care about this issue?

Miller
Miller, I'm glad to learn you are a loving and responsible pet owner. But why would you support not making efforts to trace tagged lost dogs. If your dog became lost, wouldn't you want that effort made for your pet?
BTW, my dog is not allowed to roam. He is on a leash except when he is playing with the neighbor's children and their dog in their front yard across the street. He loves them dearly and waits all day for them to come outside to play.

It's a tough call IMO.....I might have to agree with the 72 hour deal, but not for obviously well fed and cared for pets and certainly not for properly tagged pets....in North Carolina if your pet gets away and picked up you have to pay to get it back or it'll be adopted out or euthanised....we had an escape artist beagle that I had to pay for several times to get back from the pound over the course of time....eventually he played "Raven Ridge Road Roulette" once too often......
McGentrix, good job on again jumping on any opportunity to prove what a hard tough guy you are.....
Arnold changes his mind re killing pets faster

SACRAMENTO - Saying he made a mistake months ago that would have made it easier for shelters to kill stray dogs and cats, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Friday he has reinstated the state's six-day waiting period before lost animals could be killed.
As part of his budget proposal that was first drafted in December, the governor had asked the Legislature to repeal a 1998 law that requires the shelters to hold animals up to six days before destroying them. The governor wanted to save money bu cutting the waiting period in half.
But after a nationwide storm of protest, the governor hastily organized a press conference outside his Capitol office and told reporters of his error.
"I realized last night that there was a mistake that I made on the budget," he explained, noting he only had a few weeks to put his proposed budget together between his inauguration in November and when the document went to the printers in December to meet the Jan. 10 deadline for delivery a spending plan to the Legislature.
The idea to cut the waiting period would have saved local governments that operate the shelters $14 million, according to the governor's office.
Statewide, an estimated 600,000 dogs and cats are put to death each year, including 34,000 in Los Angeles alone. In addition to cats and dogs, the shelters also care for many other animals including birds, hamsters, potbellied pigs, rabbits, snakes and turtles.
H.D. Palmer, a spokesman for the state Department of Finance, had said the six-day waiting period caused overcrowding and forced some shelters to kill off animals.
Despite Schwarzenegger's huge popularity, some political observers think he is stepping in the cat litter.
"There is no organized constituency of cats and dogs, but certainly the pet owners of America will find this reprehensible," said Barbara O'Connor, director of the Institute for the Study of Politics and Media at California State University, Sacramento.
"Cats and dogs are like mom and apple pie," she said. "Don't mess with the pets. Most people prefer them to other people."

ColMan
ColMan, Albuquerque has a strong animal adoption program with several sites. It also sponsors pet adoption days at stores like Pet Smart, etc.
Vets also advise owners of puppies getting their first shots to have the microchip installed in all pets so they can be identified and recovered if they become lost. Maddy got his during his first visit to the vet.

It would appear that how long an animal must be held in New Mexico is a matter of local jurisdiction.
Quote:NM ST ยง 77-1-12 This New Mexico statute provides that each municipality and each county shall make provision by ordinance for the seizure and disposition of dogs and cats running at large and not kept or claimed by any person on their premises.
http://www.animallaw.info/statutes/statestatutes/stusnmset.htm
Edgewood, NM, mandates a holding perid of 4 days (no mention made on the page of whether this includes days when the shelter is closed, if any) for strays without identification and 7 days for strays with identification. Also no mention of whether ID includes microchip or not. (I would assume it does; they are widely used. In fact, no animal can leave a shelter in the Seattle area -- the only area I'm relly familiar with -- without a microchip or a certificate for a free microchip.)
