To a sailor, that is the equivalent of saying "good fortune" or "good luck".

I didn't realise Americans could do irony, sorry. But I did think another metaphor (carefully-chosen as it was) would help the questioner. I did want my reply to be brief; you can over-work these things.
Maybe he'll come back if he's still puzzled.

To a sailor in a sailing boat or ship, a fair wind is one that is blowing in the direction he wants to go, and a calm sea is one with no large waves that will rock the boat or ship excessively or endanger it.
