How to say how far is it from xx to xx?

I am a Chinese student. I am not good at English. Would friends here like to help me with some English questions?
I do not know how to say how far is it from xx to xx.
For instance, "That supermarket is 12 miles away XXXX to the north-west." Is that right? And does it means the supermarket is in the north-west of XXXX?
