What good does religion offer the world today?

@neologist,
Humans don't need superstitious fables and revelations pushing them towards their own self destruction.

Like a tall and gnarly old tree who thinks just because they cannot see their roots sunken deep into the earth that they are not there. So they imagine another, more fanciful past that neglects the very evident thing that has nurtured them to life. rr

@neologist,
Are you implying that self destruction is a dominant trait or an inevitable human outcome?

Do you not think your opinions are not colored by these false fables you seem so hellbent on believing?

Perhaps humans have more self preservation than your seemingly silent deity?

We have, "according to science", been evolving for billions of years from pond chemicals.

Is science not a more empowering idea than we being born in sin and doomed to failure?

I cannot help but sense a bit of sarcasm in your responses. Smile

You discerned that without me having to add the word 'cynical'.

But I know you and I do not want others who do not know me as well to misunderstand me bro. Smile

@TheCobbler,
That statement of Mr. Krauss is simply not true. Science DOES claim to know the answer to some questions long before being posed.

How do you suppose Mr Krauss, Stephen Hawking and a bunch of other scientists would respond to this question:

Is it possible that God created the universe and life?

I would hope they would respond...of course it is possible.

We do not know if there is a god...and I would hope these intelligent people would consider that in offering an answer.

It is possible.

@Leadfoot,
Science does not claim truths, evidence and rigorous observation speaks for itself.

Unlike those who speak for God with no tangible evidence or observation to show for it.

@TheCobbler,
There's an ongoing push in the S. Korean parliament to start making religious organizations pay taxes. A little over 50% of Koreans report no religious affiliation, so if it were up to a popular vote, it might pass. However, the church types here love to get their hands into politics, so...

Naw, "We hold theses truths to be self evident...." . Just because we sometimes act contrary to those truths does not mean they were not embedded within us by the Creator.

@Leadfoot,
The devil/god made us do it? Sounds like an excuse to shift the blame. Be responsible and stop blaming deities like a sociopath (I was possessed.). Own up to your own mistakes. At least blame yourself, society, lack of privilege or your parents (something EVIDENT and real) Yes, and where is your evidence for your creator again? Smile

@TheCobbler,
This is already in the Bible, Rex.
Quote:
Romans 2:14–15
14 For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. 15 They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them. . .

@neologist,
I can find you another new testament scripture to contradict that one too.

Like the one that says we have a "bad nature" unless we bow down to Jesus.

And (let's not forget this one) we are the children of sin unless we are born again to God...

I don't mean to rain on your parade Neo but the Bible has more contradicting "truths" than a drunken sailor.

@TheCobbler,
The exact words don't ring a bell. But we are supposed to submit to Jesus' direction.

He's a good guy. What's your beef?
